This Christmas romance came about because I wanted to write a story that took place at Christmas time and in one of my favourite locations: Cole Harbour. You know, Home of Sydney Crosby. He may have put the community on the world map, but it was a great place to be long before that.

Cole Harbour has always been known for hockey and its rink, which in the 1980s was Scotia Stadium. That’s where I skated, both on Sunday evenings at the open skate and in the middle of the night, when we’d book ice time to play hockey. I also took my young nieces and nephews there for morning skates.

Scotia Stadium transformed into Cole Harbour Place, which has two ice surfaces, the library, café, community rooms, skate sharpening shop and other things that never interested me, so I can’t say what they are.

The street Jan Cooper, the leading lady in the story, lives on is fictional, but it’s off of Caldwell Road, a real street. It felt better this way. Most of the other details are real, such as the Cole Harbour Fire Department selling Christmas trees in the 1990s when the story takes place. I’m not sure if they still sell them in 2021.
